Delaware County Women Against Rape is a private, non-profit agency founded in 1974. The primary mission of the agency is to provide comprehensive direct services to victims of rape and other sexual assaults in Delaware County, and to their significant others. A further aim is to increase awareness of the problem of sexual violence and to provide for more compassionate treatment of victims in the relevant systems, by providing education programs to schools and community groups, as well as trainings for professionals in related disciplines. In July 2000, the agency expanded its mission and service delivery system to include unserved victims of other serious crimes. The services to this population mirror existing agency services provided to sexual assault victims, and are delivered by dedicated staff in the agency’s Crime Victims Services (CVS) program. Comprehensive direct services are provided to victims of sexual assault and other serious crimes, as well as services to their significant others. Direct services to victims include: crisis intervention; accompaniment to forensic medical examinations at area hospital and medical facilities; accompaniment to police interviews; accompaniment to all court proceedings; individual and group counseling for teens, adult rape and incest survivors; and advocacy. Since 2001, the agency has assisted eligible victims in obtaining $684,018 in Crime Victims Compensation awards, with another $94,554 claims pending as of December 2006. In addition, each year the agency presents over 1400 education programs reaching over 34,000 individuals. A majority of the programs is presented in county elementary and secondary schools.
